Dr. Kiage and his staff continued to bring high quality eye care to patients living in the rural and urban communities of southwestern Kenya. Through door-to-door screening, outreach camps and collaboration with community health personnel, they worked hard to ensure no patient with eye care needs was left behind. Their most significant milestone this year was the expansion of the hospital to nearby Kisumu. The new facility is more accessible to patients from Nairobi and other lake region countries such as Uganda and Rwanda. Besides modern phacoemulsification cataract surgery, laser treatment, glaucoma and corneal surgery, the new hospital offers vitreoretinal surgical services, ensuring that comprehensive eye care services are available to their clientele.

The Clinica Boa Visao in Mocuba, Mozambique wrapped up a successful first year of operation, having delivered care to over 6,500 patients. Under the direction of Dr. Isac Da Gama, the hospital initiated outreach services to several neighboring provinces, including Nampula, Sofala, Ile, Molevala and Lugela. As always, all patients are cared for, regardless of their ability to pay. Significantly, a full sixty percent of the operations performed at the hospital were done free of charge. This accomplishment was made possible by a sliding scale payment system, under which paying patients, who are attracted to the hospital due to its high quality of care, subsidize those without financial means.
